This book expands on the classical statistical multivariate analysis theory by focusing on bilinear regression models, a class of models comprising the classical growth curve model and its extensions. In order to analyze the bilinear regression models in an interpretable way, concepts from linear models are extended and applied to tensor spaces. Further, the book considers decompositions of tensor products into natural subspaces, and addresses maximum likelihood estimation, residual analysis, influential observation analysis and testing hypotheses, where properties of estimators such as moments, asymptotic distributions or approximations of distributions are also studied. Throughout the text, examples and several analyzed data sets illustrate the different approaches, and fresh insights into classical multivariate analysis are provided. This monograph is of interest to researchers and Ph.D. students in mathematical statistics, signal processing and other fields where statistical multivariate analysis is utilized. It can also be used as a text for second graduate-level courses on multivariate analysis.

Goal and Scope Definition in Life Cycle Assessment
Mary Ann Curran
- Springer
- 22 Septembre 2016
- 9789402408553
This book describes the importance of the goal and scope phase for the entire LCA study. In this first phase of the LCA framework (ISO standardized), the purpose of the assessment is defined and decisions are made about the details of the industrial system being studied and how the study will be conducted. Selecting impact categories, category indicators, characterization models, and peer review is decided during goal and scope definition. The book provides practical guidance and an overview of LCIA methods available in LCA software. Although not specified in the ISO standards, Attributional LCA and Consequential LCA are presented in order to appropriately determine the goal and scope of an assessment. The book closes with the interconnection between goal and scope definition and the interpretation phase. Example goal and scope documents for attributional and consequential LCAs are provided in the annexes.

Quantum Signatures of Chaos
Fritz Haake, Sven Gnutzmann, Marek Kus
- Springer
- 18 Février 2019
- 9783319975801
This by now classic text provides an excellent introduction to and survey of the still-expanding field of quantum chaos. For this long-awaited fourth edition, the original text has been thoroughly modernized.
The topics include a brief introduction to classical Hamiltonian chaos, a detailed exploration of the quantum aspects of nonlinear dynamics, quantum criteria used to distinguish regular and irregular motion, and antiunitary (generalized time reversal) and unitary symmetries. The standard Wigner-Dyson symmetry classes, as well as the non-standard ones introduced by Altland and Zirnbauer, are investigated and illustrated with numerous examples. Random matrix theory is presented in terms of both classic methods and the supersymmetric sigma model. The power of the latter method is revealed by applications outside random-matrix theory, such as to quantum localization, quantum graphs, and universal spectral fluctuations of individual chaotic dynamics. The equivalence of the sigma model and Gutzwiller's semiclassical periodic-orbit theory is demonstrated. Last but not least, the quantum mechanics of dissipative chaotic systems are also briefly described.
Each chapter is accompanied by a selection of problems that will help newcomers test and deepen their understanding, and gain a firm command of the methods presented. -
The Springer Handbook of Nanomaterials covers the description of materials which have dimension on the "nanoscale". The description of the nanomaterials in this Handbook follows the thorough but concise explanation of the synergy of structure, properties, processing and applications of the given material. The Handbook mainly describes materials in their solid phase; exceptions might be e.g. small sized liquid aerosols or gas bubbles in liquids. The materials are organized by their dimensionality. Zero dimensional structures collect clusters, nanoparticles and quantum dots, one dimensional are nanowires and nanotubes, while two dimensional are represented by thin films and surfaces. The chapters in these larger topics are written on a specific materials and dimensionality combination, e.g. ceramic nanowires. Chapters are authored by well-established and well-known scientists of the particular field. They have measurable part of publications and an important role in establishing new knowledge of the particular field.

- 9781071635971
The New Mathematical Coloring Book (TNMCB) includes striking results of the past 15-year renaissance that produced new approaches, advances, and solutions to problems from the first edition. A large part of the new edition "Ask what your computer can do for you," presents the recent breakthrough by Aubrey de Grey and works by Marijn Heule, Jaan Parts, Geoffrey Exoo, and Dan Ismailescu. TNMCB introduces new open problems and conjectures that will pave the way to the future keeping the book in the center of the field. TNMCB presents mathematics of coloring as an evolution of ideas, with biographies of their creators and historical setting of the world around them, and the world around us.
A new thing in the world at the time, TMCB I is now joined by a colossal sibling containing more than twice as much of what only Alexander Soifer can deliver: an interweaving of mathematics with history and biography, well-seasoned with controversy and opinion. -Peter D. Johnson, Jr.Auburn University
Like TMCB I, TMCB II is a unique combination of Mathematics, History, and Biography written by a skilled journalist who has been intimately involved with the story for the last half-century. ...The nature of the subject makes much of the material accessible to students, but also of interest to working Mathematicians. ... In addition to learning some wonderful Mathematics, students will learn to appreciate the influences of Paul Erdos, Ron Graham, and others.-Geoffrey ExooIndiana State University
The beautiful and unique Mathematical coloring book of Alexander Soifer is another case of "good mathematics", containing a lot of similar examples (it is not by chance that Szemerédi's Theorem story is included as well) and presenting mathematics as both a science and an art...-Peter MihókMathematical Reviews, MathSciNet
A postman came to the door with a copy of the masterpiece of the century. I thank you and the mathematics community should thank you for years to come. You have set a standard for writing about mathematics and mathematicians that will be hard to match.- Harold W. KuhnPrinceton University
I have never encountered a book of this kind. The best description of it I can give is that it is a mystery novel... I found it hard to stop reading before I finished (in two days) the whole text. Soifer engages the reader's attention not only mathematically, but emotionally and esthetically. May you enjoy the book as much as I did!- Branko GrünbaumUniversity of Washington
I am in absolute awe of your 2008 book.

Following on from the highly acclaimed Parts 1 to 3, this book provides detailed insights into how space and popular culture intersect across a broad spectrum of examples, including cinema, music, art, arcade games, cartoons, comics, and advertisements. This is a pertinent topic since the use of space themes differs in different cultural contexts, and these themes can be used to explore various aspects of the human condition and provide a context for social commentary on politically sensitive issues. With the use of space imagery evolving over the past sixty years of the space age, this is a topic ripe for in-depth exploration. The book also discusses the contrasting visions of space from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and the reality of today and analyzes space vehicles and habitats in popular depictions of space from an engineering perspective, exploring how many of those ideas have actually been implemented in practice and why or why not (a case of life imitating art and vice versa). As such, it covers a wide array of relevant and timely topics examining intersections between space and popular culture and offering accounts of space and its effect on culture, language, and storytelling from the southern regions of the world.

- Springer
- 14 Mai 2024
- 9789819712199
This book reflects the latest legal development of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), and makes direct and positive responses-it uses first-hand, authoritative information and makes insightful and persuasive analyses in addressing those concerns. In particular, this book provides nuanced analysis of the following topics:
- capital allocation of the AIIB, in comparison with those of Bretton Woods institutions;- dynamic relationship between the shareholder board and management, a central topic of corporate governance for the AIIB and other MDBs;- AIIB's environmental and social safeguards, including its frontier ESG portfolio investments, in comparison with the World Bank standards;- highly debatable issues relating to the interaction between AIIB, Belt and Road, and MCDF;- comparative study of state-owned enterprises in the laws of AIIB, WTO, ICSID, etc..This book targets academics, students, policymakers, and businesscircles who are interested in AIIB, given the bank's growing importance in the context of global economic governance reforms. First, the book is a must for those who are keen to gain insight into the AIIB. Ten years have passed since the debut of the idea of AIIB in 2013, and the topic has never retreated from the debate of the international community-a major concern is whether a China-led multilateral development bank (MDB) remains to be politically neutral, or professional, and can live up to high standards. -
