The study of material culture is concerned with the relationship between persons and things in the past and in the present, in urban and industrialized and in small-scale societies across the globe. The Handbook of Material Culture provides a critical survey of the theories, concepts, intellectual debates, substantive domains and traditions of study characterizing the analysis of things. It is cutting-edge: rather than simply reviewing the field as it currently exists. It also attempts to chart the future: the manner in which material culture studies may be extended and developed.
The Handbook of Material Culture is divided into five sections.
o Section I maps material culture studies as a theoretical and conceptual field.
o Section II examines the relationship between material forms, the human body and the senses.
o Section III focuses on subject-object relations.
o Section IV considers things in terms of processes and transformations in terms of production, exchange and consumption, performance and the significance of things over the long-term.
o Section V considers the contemporary politics and poetics of displaying, representing and conserving material and the manner in which this impacts on notions of heritage, tradition and identity.
The Handbook charts an interdisciplinary field of studies that makes an unique and fundamental contribution to an understanding of what it means to be human. It will be of interest to all who work in the social and historical sciences, from anthropologists and archaeologists to human geographers to scholars working in heritage, design and cultural studies. -

`Fast becoming a contemporary classic... this book tries both to be critical and engender critical thinking in a number of ways. It offers an overview of a number of theories that address human distress as well as particular forms of "pathology". This book effectively highlights the way that western society has taken "normal"; and "abnormal" emotional states to be factual entities rather than the constructed understandings of human phenomena that they are.... should be on the reading list of every course/module that attends to human distress' - Journal of the Society for Existential Analysis
This practical and accessible critique of the institutions, practices and presuppositions that underlie the study of `psychopathology' will be invaluable for students and practitioners who are working to understand mental health and distress.
The authors - who come from backgrounds in clinical psychology, psychiatric social work, psychoanalysis, psychology teaching and action research - challenge the traditions of the field. They analyze the notion of `psychopathology' as a conventional term in psychology and psychiatry through the language and institutions that hold it in place; and explore the implications of deconstructive ideas for the theories and practices that sustain clinical treatments; and offer an alternative way of seeing `psychopathology', with accounts of critical professional work and good practice.
Deconstructing Psychopathology is invaluable reading for students, academics and practitioners across a range of disciplines who are working to understand mental health and distress, including
clinical and counselling psychology, psychiatry, psychiatric social work, counselling and psychotherapy. -
In this provocative and broad-ranging work, the authors argue that the ways in which knowledge - scientific, social and cultural - is produced are undergoing fundamental changes at the end of the twentieth century. They claim that these changes mark a distinct shift into a new mode of knowledge production which is replacing or reforming established institutions, disciplines, practices and policies.
Identifying features of the new mode of knowledge production - reflexivity, transdisciplinarity, heterogeneity - the authors show how these features connect with the changing role of knowledge in social relations. While the knowledge produced by research and development in science and technology is accorded central concern, the authors also outline the changing dimensions of social scientific and humanities knowledge and the relations between the production of knowledge and its dissemination through education. -

- 9781643683034
The aim of medical research has always been to gain scientific knowledge which will serve to improve the diagnosis, therapy and prevention of diseases. It is also becoming increasingly important to take account of the changing circumstances of medical care. Factors such as the ageing of society and the recent pandemic have not only led to greater use of medical care, but have also put the human resources and infrastructural basis of the health system under great pressure. Such developments call for science-based solutions which can better adapt medical action to the needs of patients to ensure that medicine remains affordable and accessible for all.
This book is the 6th volume of the German Medical Data Science series in Studies in Health Technology and Informatics and presents the proceedings of the joint conference of the 67th Annual Meeting of the German Association of Medical Informatics, Biometry, and Epidemiology (GMDS) and the 14th Annual Meeting of the Technology and Methods Platform for Networked Medical Research (TMF). The conference was entitled Medicine in Transition - More Precise, More Integrative, More Sustainable. It was due to be held from 21-25 August 2022 in Kiel, Germany, but was changed to an online event on the same dates due to an increasing surge in cases of coronavirus. The pandemic has not only disrupted the planning of many events, it has also impressively demonstrated the importance of technical and methodological aspects of digitization. The 13 papers included here address the challenges of and opportunities for the digitization so vital for the functionality of the modern healthcare system, and the book will be of interest to all those involved in the planning and delivery of healthcare. -

It covers a range of topics from (de)coloniality, geopolitics, and transdisciplinarity to decolonial feminisms, gender and sexuality studies, and racial capitalism. The Sage Handbook of Decolonial Theory is not just for academics; it is written for anyone interested in radical thought and praxis. The amount of data produced, captured and transmitted through the media has never been greater. But for this data to be useful, it needs to be properly understood and claims made about or with data need to be properly scrutinized.
Through a series of examples of statistics in the media, this book shows you how to critically assess the presentation of data in the media, to identify what is significant and to sort verifiable conclusions from misleading claims. How accurate are polls, and how should we know? How should league tables be read? Are numbers presented as `large' really as big as they may seem at first glance? By answering these questions and more, readers will learn a number of statistical concepts central to many undergraduate social science statistics courses. By tying them in to real life examples, the importance and relevance of these concepts comes to life. As such, this book does more than teaches techniques needed for a statistics course; it teaches you life skills that we need to use every single day. -

- Robyn Eckersley, University of Melbourne
The SAGE Handbook of Environment and Society focuses on the interactions between people, societies and economies, and the state of nature and the environment. Editorially integrated but written from multi-disciplinary perspectives, it is organised in seven sections:
Environmental thought: past and present
Valuing the environment
Knowledges and knowing
Political economy of environmental change
Environmental technologies
Redesigning natures
Institutions and policies for influencing the environment
Key themes include: locations where the environment-society relation is most acute: where, for example, there are few natural resources or where industrialization is unregulated; the discussion of these issues at different scales: local, regional, national, and global; the cost of damage to resources; and the relation between principal actors in the environment-society nexus.
Aimed at an international audience of academics, research students, researchers, practitioners and policy makers, The SAGE Handbook of Environment and Society presents readers in social science and natural science with a manual of the past, present and future of environment-society links.
