Le maréchal Tamas a réussi son coup d'État, écrasé les royalistes et mis en branle des élections. Mais la guerre avec les Kez, qui espéraient bien s'emparer des richesses d'Adro avec la complicité du roi déchu Manhouch, risque de mettre un frein à ses ambitions. Surtout qu'après la chute de la cité frontalière Budviel, Tamas se retrouve coincé derrière les lignes ennemies avec une partie de ses troupes, pourchassé par toute une armée. Ses dons de stratège suffiront-ils ? Dans le même temps, la nouvelle de sa mort atteint Adro...
À Adopest, l'inspecteur Adamat tente désespérément de sauver son épouse et ses enfants des griffes du maléfique Seigneur Vetas. Il va pour cela devoir se lancer dans une nouvelle enquête aux révélations saisissantes.
De son côté, après la destruction du Pic du Sud, Taniel Deux-coups a sombré dans une profonde dépression dont il doit sortir pour défendre les lignes adranes. Mais comment retenir à lui tout seul une armée entière ? Surtout que, derrière les lignes adverses, le dieu Kresimir, rendu fou par la douleur, cherche encore celui qui a tenté de le tuer...

Le maréchal Tamas rentre dans son pays bien-aimé pour découvrir que, pour la première fois de son histoire, la capitale d'Adro est aux mains d'un envahisseur. Son fils a disparu, il ne peut plus distinguer ses alliés de ses ennemis et les renforts ne seront pas là avant plusieurs semaines...
Sur la frontière, alors que les Kez poursuivent leur offensive et qu'elle est plus que jamais sans commandement clair, l'armée d'Adran est en plein désarroi. D'autant plus que quelqu'un, semble-t-il, vend des secrets à l'ennemi. L'inspecteur Adamat est entraîné au coeur même de cette machination pour mener son enquête, mais, au fur et à mesure que la conspiration s'effiloche, une terrible vérité prend forme.
De son côté, Taniel Deux-coups, le poudremage qui a logé une balle dans l'oeil d'un dieu, est en fuite, pourchassé par des hommes qu'il considérait autrefois comme ses amis. Il possède le seul moyen de vaincre les Kez, mais pour ce faire, il doit éviter la trahison qui menace de toutes parts. S'il échoue, Adro tombera. -
